University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar to Reduce the Phenomenon of Suicide

The College of Veterinary Medicine, in cooperation with the University of Basrah’s Counseling Center, organized an awareness seminar titled “The Phenomenon of Suicide: Causes and Solutions.”

The seminar aimed to raise students’ awareness about the increasing incidence of suicide among young people in Iraq by analyzing its underlying causes and presenting integrated strategies to address it and reduce its consequences.

The event included a lecture delivered by Dr. Iman Qasim from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Noor Kate’a from the University Psychological Counseling Center. The speakers highlighted the psychological factors that may contribute to this issue—such as depression and chronic anxiety—as well as social influences and certain cultural upbringing patterns that may increase psychological pressure on youth.The seminar recommended the importance of collective community efforts to limit this phenomenon. It also emphasized the need for continuous support for young people and encouraging them to engage in meaningful, positive activities as a key preventive approach.
