University of Basrah Holds a Lecture on Rumen Development in Calves
To enhance livestock production efficiency, the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah organized a lecture on rumen development in calves.
The lecture aimed to focus on the functional and histological development of the calf rumen and to monitor its early stages through scientific feeding strategies that ensure maximum feed utilization, leading to faster growth and higher productivity.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Namir Abdul Kareem Khudair, who discussed a comparison of the histological and anatomical structure of the calf rumen at different life stages, and explained methods to accelerate rumen functional development in young calves in the shortest possible time to achieve faster and more efficient production.
The lecture recommended providing water starting from the third day after birth, along with offering feeds such as grains or roughages, in order to stimulate the growth and proliferation of bacteria inside the rumen, thereby enhancing its digestive efficiency at an early age.
