Effects of Melatonin and Ginseng on the Reproductive Performance of Awassi Ewes

University of Basrah Discusses the Effects of Melatonin and Ginseng on the Reproductive Performance of Awassi Ewes
A master’s thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, investigated the topic “A Comparative Study of the Effects of Melatonin and Ginseng on the Reproductive Performance of Awassi Ewes.”
The thesis, presented by Abdullah Qasim Majeed, evaluated the effects of melatonin and ginseng supplementation on the levels of key reproductive hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and estrogen, at different time intervals. The study also assessed several reproductive performance indicators in Awassi ewes.
The findings demonstrated that both melatonin and ginseng treatments contributed to improved reproductive performance and increased reproductive hormone levels. Melatonin showed a particularly significant effect, enhancing twinning rates and increasing the number of lambs produced per ewe, possibly through its role in stimulating multiple ovulations and reducing oxidative stress.
The thesis recommended further investigation into the use of ear implants as an alternative method for melatonin administration, as well as determining optimal dosage levels. It also highlighted the importance of studying antioxidants and other nutritional supplements and investigating potential synergistic effects between melatonin and ginseng to further enhance reproductive efficiency, including fertility in rams.
