A study at the University of Basrah diagnoses the causes of postpartum estrus in local buffalo
A master's thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, has been discussed "Evaluation of Postpartum estrus in the Local Iraqi Buffalo by integrating Ultrasound Examination with Hormonal Analysis and Oxidative Stress Indicators."
The thesis was submitted by student Yahia Attia Hassan, included a field study of 91 buffalo enduring from postpartum estrus in Basrah and Thi-Qar, and 5 normal buffalo as a control group. The reproductive system was examined using ultrasound, and progesterone, estradiol, and cortisol hormone levels were measured, along with antioxidant analysis (GSH-Px, CAT, SOD) and MDA.
The thesis concluded that anestrus is a multifactorial condition, with heat stress and poor nutrition contributes to its occurrence. Ultrasound ascertained highly effective tool in diagnosing its causes, enhanced by hormonal and biochemical findings.
The thesis recommended routinely using transrectal ultrasound for early diagnosis, improving post-calving buffalo nutrition, providing cooling and shade to lower heat stress, and treating uterine infections promptly.
