University of Basrah Investigates Molecular Detection of Fungi and Mycotoxins in Poultry Feed and Products
A master’s thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, investigated the molecular detection of fungi and mycotoxins in poultry feed and its products, with particular emphasis on their effects on productive performance and public health.
The thesis, submitted by the student Wurood Nasser Abbas, included the detection of fungi and mycotoxins in poultry feed and animal products using molecular and laboratory techniques. It also evaluated their effects on productive performance indicators in laying hens and their potential implications for food safety and consumer health.
The study revealed a notable prevalence of several fungal genera, particularly Aspergillus and Fusarium, with evidence indicating the possible transfer of certain mycotoxins from contaminated feed to poultry tissues and eggs. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring feed and animal products to minimize the risks associated with fungal contamination and mycotoxins.
The study recommended strengthening regular inspection and monitoring programs for poultry feed, improving storage and manufacturing conditions, and adopting good practices to limit fungal growth and mycotoxin production. It also recommended stricter monitoring of animal products to enhance food safety and protect consumer health.
