Surgery on a Cow Suffering from Bloat

University of Basrah Performs a Successful Surgery on a Cow Suffering from Bloat

A medical team from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, has successfully performed a surgical operation to open the rumen of a cow suffering from a severe case of bloat.

The medical team explained that the case was brought in after the owner noticed a clear swelling on the left side of the abdomen, along with cessation of rumination, loss of appetite, and difficulty in breathing.

Clinical examination revealed that the swelling was caused by an abnormal accumulation of materials inside the rumen, which required immediate surgical intervention.
During the procedure, the rumen was opened and thoroughly cleaned after removing unhealthy materials that the cow had recently consumed, which were responsible for stopping rumen function and causing the bloat.

Following the surgery, the cow received supportive therapy, antibiotics, and fluid replacement, and the condition stabilized completely, with the cow regaining its normal activity.
