Enhance Animal Feed and Improve Animal Health

University of Basrah Outlines a Plan to Enhance Animal Feed and Improve Animal Health*

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah held a specialized workshop on ways to improve roughage (coarse fodder) and its direct effects on animal health, bringing together experts and stakeholders from the veterinary and agricultural fields.

Faculty members from the Department of Veterinary Public Health delivered a lecture in which they explained what roughage is, underscored its essential role in ruminant nutrition, and laid out the reasons for boosting its nutritional value and making better use of it.

The discussion addressed a range of feed processing techniques—physical, chemical, and biological—including alkali treatment, urea application, fermentation, and silage production. Participants also examined the use of agricultural by-products and locally available feed sources, reviewing the pros and cons of each approach and how they affect productive performance.

This effort reflects the College's commitment to promoting scientific and applied knowledge in animal nutrition and to encouraging the best possible use of local feed resources, ultimately improving animal health and productivity.
