University of Basrah Holds Awareness Seminar on Rabies
Coinciding with World Rabies Day, the Department of Gardens and Technological Sciences, in cooperation with the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah, organized an awareness seminar on rabies, aimed at raising community awareness and clarifying the appropriate procedures to be followed following exposure to the disease.
The seminar included a lecture delivered by Dr. Sarah Salem Mohammed, a faculty member at the College of Veterinary Medicine, who explained the causes of the disease, its modes of transmission, and its clinical manifestations in humans and animals within the framework of the One Health concept.
The seminar emphasized the importance of preventive vaccination of animals, along with the need to develop comprehensive plans for the management and vaccination of stray dogs. It also recommended strengthening direct collaboration between the health and veterinary sectors to reduce the spread of the virus.
The seminar further highlighted that eliminating rabies is a shared community responsibility that requires coordinated efforts and scientific cooperation among academic institutions, health authorities, and veterinary organizations. Such collaboration is essential for creating a safe environment free from this serious viral disease.
